§ 111.540. Definitions.

  • For the purpose of this article the following definitions shall apply unless the context clearly indicates or requires a different meaning.

    A.

    " Street ." Any public or private street, alley, or public way within the corporate limits of the City.

    B.

    " Taxicab ." All motor-driven vehicles engaged in the business of carrying passengers for hire or fare for operating within the City, including anyone offering rides for free and accepting tips.

    C.

    " Taxicab company ." Every corporation, company, association, joint stock association, person, firm, or partnership or their lessees, trustees, receivers, or trustees appointed by any court, owning, controlling, operating, maintaining or managing one or more taxicabs within the City.

    D.

    " Taxicab driver ." Any person who drives or operates a taxicab and who is in actual physical control of a taxicab on the streets of the City.

    E.

    " Transportation company ." Every corporation, company, association, joint stock association, person, firm, or partnership or their lessees, trustees, receivers, and trustees appointed by any court owning, controlling, operating, or managing any vehicle engaged in the business of transporting persons for hire or fare within the City.

    F.

    This chapter does not apply to the following: motor buses on regular schedules, Metro Regional Transit Authority vehicles and other vehicles on regularly established routes; taxicabs and motor vehicles owned, regulated or operated by a taxing authority or district of the State of Ohio; motor vehicles used exclusively as hearses or ambulances or exclusively for service at weddings, christenings, funerals, or other similar special occasions; motor vehicles leased or rented for private use without the service of a chauffeur or driver; motor vehicles properly licensed by the state of Ohio as limousines or livery vehicles as long as the vehicles are operating within the laws of Ohio as limousines and are only picking up passengers on prearranged contracts made in advance of boarding. If the limousine is picking up passengers without prearranged contracts, the vehicle is operating as a taxicab.
